Priyanka Chopra's father instigated his daughter's entry into the world of high-profile beauty contests when he sent pictures of her to the Femina Miss India pageant organization in 2000. Not only was she selected to compete in the contest, but she was ultimately crowned Miss India, allowing her the chance to compete on the international level. That same year, the then 18-year-old went on to win the Miss World title as well. She left college around this time to embark on a whole new career.
With her star on the rise in her native India, Chopra quickly became a sought-after big-screen siren. In 2001, she landed her debut role of Priya in Thamizhan, a Tamil-language film, released the following year. She launched her Hindi-language movie career playing Shaheen Zakaria in The Hero: Love Story of A Spy. The Bollywood feature earned her good reviews, and went on to become a surprise hit as one of the top-grossing films of 2003. Her performance as Jiya in Andaaz, co-starring Akshay Kumar, proved another success, earning her Filmfare's Best Female Debut Award as well as a Supporting Actress nomination.
